Poás Volcano
One of the most popular attractions close to San Jose is the Poás Volcano. Towering far above the greater San Jose area, you will relish the vista provided on the drive up or on your way down. It's only a one hour trip one-way from San Jose, more or less.
These pictures were taken on a fairly cloudy day, which at that elevation, occurs quite often. Be prepared to see images like the following; set your expectations for seeing this natural wonder as shown here rather than the images tourist websites generally show of the crater.
Be sure to stop and admire the view -- there are a few great viewing points high above the central valley. Also, you will see signs for Fresa del Volcan from about this point all the way to the entrance of the park. For those who don't know, these are strawberries grown all around the area and they are delicious.
Please have a look at our gallery below of the crater, the lake (super cloudy) and the animal life easily spotted on this easy hike. Entrance to the park is reasonably priced and there is a small information center that provides information about flora and fauna in Costa Rica. Be sure to check it all out!
