Most of our properties do not include electricity in order to encourage sustainable use of that precious resource in Costa Rica. All beach homes fall under this category and are charged at the approximate rate of 30-34 cents per KWH, based on rate and currency fluctuations. Please see below for our Eco-Policy which describes this necessity further.*
If you choose to pay cash upon arrival, we will offer a 5% discount on the rental amount (not including additional services).
Please note that our security deposit is based on a weekly rental or less. If you are renting for more than two weeks, our security deposit increases on most properties; however, the monthly rate sometimes goes into effect and is less costly. Deposits are taken only via PayPal and returned to PayPal. You may use your credit card at PayPal directly (as a guest) and you do not need a PayPal account already; however, you may need to sign up with PayPal if your deposit and booking dates are more than 60 days apart as PayPal will not refund your security deposit directly to your credit card in this case, but instead store it inside their system where you can then follow their process to transfer it cost free to your bank account. (Note for locals: Costa Rican banks may incur extra charges for any transaction, but we can only use PayPal for reservations. We have had problems a couple of times with BAC San Jose where local credit cards have been funded from Colones, even on USD capable credit cards, so it is important that you check with your bank and PayPal prior to making your deposit. In this case, you would need to sign up for a PayPal account first to ensure that your credit card withdraws in USD so as to avoid any conversion charges between PayPal and your bank. The charges to move your money from PayPal to a local Costa Rican bank will not be free, as they are for most other countries so making a reservation more than 60 days in advance will likely incur additional fees unless you leave the refund in PayPal.)
The return of the deposit minus electricity (on most of our properties) and any damages (hopefully none occur, but sometimes this does happen) is sent via PayPal within 2-4 days depending on the number of check-outs occurring at the same time. Peak times may delay this process slightly. Our team must verify, inventory and clean each property along with taking meter readings, in order to calculate the deposit's return. At peak rental times, this may delay the return of your deposit by a day or two, but please understand that our team works very hard to ensure that your deposit is returned as soon as possible!
The security deposit does not form part of the rental amount and is separate. The rental amount is payable in cash upon arrival or prior to arrival via PayPal.
*ECO-POLICY - (Applies only to the beach house rentals, not to the condos in the San Jose greater metropolitan area or the EcoVida Green Cabinas). Because of our environmental commitment, we offer rates far below market rates and add electricity to the bill at check-out. All rates are disclosed prior to booking and the meter is right in front of the given house. The less electricity used, the more we save our environment and are able to offer a fantastic deal. The more electricity used, the price jumps up! Costa Rica has a tiered rate system, so if conservation is your objective, we can offer an unbeatable rate. If not, the electricity will be substantial but within the rates others charge for a rental of this calibre. All rates are pro-rated** based on meter readings taken at check-in and check-out.
**Electricity consumption is calculated based on a prorated amount (prorated over 1 month multiplied by the number of nights stayed and based on the multi-tier system in place with the local electricity provider) and is an additional cost at check-out unless otherwise noted. Meter readings are taken by our staff who have been trained to read these meters accurately. You will have access to the meter at any time and we recommend that you monitor your usage during your stay.
The owners of EcoVida Properties lived in the same community and their average monthly consumption of electricity was around $140, but they made an effort to conserve. (They now have a solar system that produces most of their electricity). We are asked about 20 percent of the time about average electricity usage. Unfortunately, we cannot give an average as consumption really depends on the guests. We don’t want to lead you down the wrong path as some people have used as much as $300 in a week while the best consumption ever for one week is $16. Because there is such a range, we try not to give any kind of average. Anyone who conserves electricity is usually pleasantly surprised by the total in the end and because we emphasize conservation so much, we have never had too high a bill from our guests. The $300/week example was in a house taken care of by our staff, but it was the actual owner of their newly completed house that racked up that bill. Those who leave A/C running all the time definitely pay for it. We can provide many tips in saving on electricity once you are here, but taking out the abnormally high and low usage in the past, you can count on about $10 per day in electricity costs. Of course, the total really depends on you and we encourage you to help our country, where more and more electricity is being produced by unsustainable methods due to higher demand.
If you are interested in securing this accommodation, once we receive the PayPal payment for the security deposit (either through the online booking or manual process), your dates will be confirmed and you will receive a confirmation email. A request for the full payment of the rental will be sent at least two days prior to check-in unless you opt to pay cash upon arrival. Playa Bejuco Vacation Homes
You would fly into San Jose (Juan Santamaria Airport) and the beach is about 1.5 hours from SJO, the San Jose International airport, on the newest highway in Costa Rica - depending on traffic. You can either get transportation down to the beach or rent a car. We would suggest the latter unless you are staying for a longer period like a month. For longer periods, many guests enjoy the community and the beach, while only renting a vehicle periodically. There is public transportation and taxis available. We also have private transportation provided at a flat rate, so don't hop in a taxi at the airport as you will pay a great deal more!
You will find the beach only a 5 minute walk or less from the front gate. Parrita is the closest town, 13 km down the highway, and Esterillos Oeste, a surfer beach community is only 10 km and hosts our favourite grocery store, SuperSol. Both have great restaurants, while Parrita contains most everything one would need including grocery stores. We have a small "corner store" or "mini super" just outside the gates of the community where you can buy water and most things.
Of course, our new Town Center - which is just a few minutes down the road at the entrance to Playa Bejuco - offers various restaurants, a supermarket, gym, day spa and various other new businesses coming all the time. You will find we are situated between the two biggest tourist destinations in Costa Rica, Jaco and Manuel Antonio Park -- both about 30 minutes or less each direction on the highway from our very tranquil community.
For check-in and check-out, you will be directed to our property manager who will will coordinate to provide you access to the rental, provide a tour if you arrive during business hours and do the appropriate meter readings and do the appropriate meter readings.
SPECIAL NOTE: Our homes only accommodate the number of people that match the beds. Extra guests may be permitted with an extra cost; however, we permit only those registered with security at the time of booking in the houses. Guests for the day are permitted at our discretion depending on the number of occupants already registered in the rental property and will incur a fee for each guest and those guests are not permitted overnight as per our Occupancy Limitations. In order to inquire whether a day guest will be permitted and the associated fee, you can email us or the property manager prior or during your stay, well ahead of the request for a day guest. We will not accept any day guests under any circumstances if they simply arrive at the gate requesting access. Please refer to the occupancy limitations in our terms and conditions for the penalty for breaking our occupancy limit. We have rules pertaining to the public facilities and they must be adhered to in order to keep our community clean and comfortable for all our guests and other owners. Additional overnight guests will incur a hefty charge if not planned for in advance.
EcoVida Green Cabinas - Playa Bejuco
Electricity is included in this rental.
You would fly into San Jose (Juan Santamaria Airport) and the cabinas are located behind our office on the main road to the beach - a 5 minute, flat walk. We will need to coordinate your check-in ahead of time. Normally, we only accept check-ins between 2pm and 7pm. Some of our cabina guests will rent a car as well and we can help you with this, but as these cabinas were designed to be more budget conscious than our vacation homes and for smaller groups, many of our guests get here through public transportation. Our office provides many additional services including rentals of beach and sporting equipment as well as sales of local crafts. We can arrange any tours and activities in our area as well but our office is only open to cabina guests and by appointment only.
